What is a crossbite? Causes, symptoms, and treatments

If you have ever looked at your child’s smile and thought, “That doesn’t quite look right,” you are not overthinking it. Sometimes small differences in how the teeth fit together can point to a common orthodontic issue called a crossbite. The good news is that crossbites are treatable, and often easier to correct than parents expect.

At The Smile Den in Florham Park, NJ, we believe in catching concerns early and walking families through every step with clarity and care. You will never feel rushed or overwhelmed here. Our goal is to help you feel confident about your child’s smile and their treatment plan.

What is a crossbite?

A crossbite happens when some of the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth when your child bites down. Normally, the upper teeth should rest slightly outside the lower teeth.

A crossbite can affect:

  • The front teeth, called an anterior crossbite
  • The back teeth, known as a posterior crossbite
  • Just one tooth or several teeth
  • One side of the mouth or both sides

Sometimes it is very noticeable. Other times, it is subtle and only visible during an exam. Either way, it is something we can evaluate and monitor carefully.

What causes a crossbite?

Crossbites can develop for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Natural jaw growth patterns
  • A narrow upper jaw
  • Crowded teeth
  • Delayed loss of baby teeth
  • Thumb sucking or extended pacifier use

Many crossbites show up while children are still growing. This is actually a positive thing, because growth gives us more flexibility in how we treat the issue.

Why treating a crossbite early matters

You might wonder if your child will simply grow out of it. In most cases, crossbites do not correct themselves. Over time, they can lead to uneven tooth wear, gum concerns, jaw discomfort, or the jaw shifting to one side.

That said, this is not something to panic about. When identified early, crossbites are often straightforward to treat. Early care allows us to guide jaw development in a gentle and natural way.

How is a crossbite treated?

This is the part where many parents feel nervous, so let us reassure you. Crossbite treatment is typically very manageable, especially in children.

After a thorough and comfortable exam, Dr. Purvy Shah will explain exactly what is happening and why. We will take time to answer your questions and make sure you feel fully informed before moving forward.

Treatment may include:

Palatal expander
If your child has a narrow upper jaw, a palatal expander can gradually widen the upper arch. It sounds intimidating, but most children adjust very quickly. The process is gentle and happens over time, allowing the upper and lower teeth to fit together properly.

Braces or clear aligners
For older children and teens, braces or clear aligners can guide teeth into healthier positions. Today’s orthodontic options are more comfortable and streamlined than ever, and we focus on making the experience positive from start to finish.

Early interceptive orthodontics
In some cases, a short early phase of treatment between ages seven and ten can correct developing bite concerns while your child is still growing. Early treatment can sometimes prevent more complex treatment later.

Every child is different, and there is no one size fits all solution. We create personalized plans that support your child’s comfort, confidence, and long term oral health.

Signs your child may have a crossbite

You may want to schedule an evaluation if you notice:

  • Teeth that do not line up when biting down
  • The lower jaw shifting to one side
  • Difficulty chewing comfortably
  • Jaw soreness
  • An uneven smile

Even if you are unsure, it is always okay to ask. A simple evaluation can give you clarity and peace of mind.
